What is Coaching?

In essence, coaching is what 'education' used to mean: a process of bringing out the best in a person. In sport, the concept is well-understood; in life coaching or business coaching the concept is identical, but often misunderstood.

These days, coaching is often combined with one or more therapies (e.g. NLP), to have a way of tackling emotional issues that are blocking progress, such as a fear of failure causing endless procrastination.

Unlike many psychotherapies, NLP Coaching is largely forward-looking, and does not require extensive re-examination of old traumas. When the past is causing blocks in progress, there are many effective ways of resolving the issues without the need to go into great (or sometimes any) detail.

In practical terms, the client is taken through a series of conversations and exercises to find out what they are trying to achieve and help them clarify their thoughts to get there. The coach has a great many tools with which to do this.

Every coach, regardless of their training, will have their own specialties, usually drawing on other experience and training (such as system design, or healthwork); thus you can find Health Coaches, Wealth Coaches, Business Coaches, Performance Coaches and pretty well any type of coach you can imagine.

In the end, it comes down to whether you feel comfortable opening up with them, and how mind-expanding you find their particular questions and exercises.
